1. What are the requirements for becoming a registered architect?

Most states require that (1) you hold a professional degree in architecture which is equivalent to a program accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB), (2) you have satisfied the experience requirements of the Intern Development Program (IDP) and (3) you have completed the Architect Registration examination. A few states have different requirements. You may review each state’s requirements by clicking on “Registration Boards” on NCARB’s homepage.

2. How do I submit my qualifications?

You should begin by establishing an NCARB Council Record. You will be asked to submit your qualifications on forms provided by NCARB. You can download an application to begin your Council Record from our website.

3. How long does it take to compile my qualifications?

The time varies, depending on the extensiveness of your education and employment histories. It generally takes a minimum of six months to compile your qualifications.

4. How can I find out if my foreign professional degree program is accredited by NAAB?

NAAB does not accredit foreign professional degree programs. A listing of NAAB-accredited programs can be found on their website: www.naab.org.

5. Who determines whether my foreign degree is equivalent to an NAAB-accredited degree program?

The National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) is the only agency recognized to perform an evaluation of your foreign education.

6. How does the evaluation process work?

NAAB will request documentation of your foreign program and will conduct a comprehensive evaluation of your course work against that found in NAAB-accredited programs. At the conclusion of this evaluation, NAAB will issue a report detailing what, if any, education deficiencies remain to be satisfied. For further information on the EESA-NCARB evaluation process, visit NAAB’s website: www.naab.org.

7. Should I get my foreign education evaluated before I establish an NCARB Council Record?

Submit your Council Record application first. You will be notified by NCARB regarding the EESA-NCARB evaluation and what steps to take next. An EESA-NCARB evaluation will not be required if your degree program is accredited by either NAAB or the Canadian Architectural Certification Board.

8. I have a Bachelor of Architecture degree from a foreign program and a Master of Architecture degree from a US program. Will I be required to have an EESA-NCARB evaluation?

No, as long as your Master of Architecture program is accredited by NAAB.

9. How much credit will I receive for my foreign employment?

In general, you can receive up to one year of credit for foreign employment which occurred under the direct supervision of an architect registered in that country. If your direct supervisor was registered in a US jurisdiction, you can usually receive unlimited credit.

10. I was a principal in a foreign architectural firm. Do I still have to complete the Intern Development Program’s training requirement?

You do not have to complete the IDP’s training requirement if you practiced for a least five years as a principal.

11. Do I receive any credit for being registered in my native country?

No, the fact that you are a foreign registered architect does not exempt you from having to satisfy a state’s eligibility requirements.
