NCARB Grant Program

2011 NCARB Grant for the Integration of Practice and Education in the Academy

A total of $75,000 was awarded to architecture programs at six universities to support new for-credit curricular initiatives that integrate practice and education in the academy; raise awareness of the architect’s responsibility for the public health, safety, and welfare; and address specific criteria.

Overview

The NCARB Grant supports the creation and implementation of new methods to integrate practice and education in the academy. It supports architecture schools’ efforts to create academic initiatives that will have a long-term, ongoing impact on architecture students, faculty, and the curriculum, and raise awareness about issues central to practice.

Review and Assessment Criteria

Assessment of proposals submitted will be based upon the proposal's effectiveness in integrating practice and education in the academy. Project directors are encouraged to study issues central to the architect's responsibility for the public health, safety, and welfare, and issues central to practice.

Program Requirements

Faculty members in architecture schools that are located in one of NCARB's 54 Member Board jurisdictions and that have a program that is accredited by the NAAB or a program that is a candidate for NAAB accreditation are eligible to submit proposals.

Submission Requirements

Submissions must include an institutional letter of commitment, non-faculty architect practitioner(s)' registration verification(s), project director(s)' resume, proposal abstract, proposal description, and proposal budget.

Proposal Requirements

NCARB Grant proposal requirements must conform to specific requirements.

Budget Restrictions

NCARB Grant funds are to be specifically used to support activities and initiatives that result in the integration of practice and education in the academy.

Submission Deadline

The 2011 proposal deadline was Tuesday, 11 October 2011. The 2012 schedule will be available soon.

Review Notification

NCARB Grant recipients were announced at the ACSA Administrators Conference in November 2011 and the committee's decisions will be communicated by letter to all applicants in early December 2011.

2007 Practice Analysis of Architecture
The purpose of a Practice Analysis is to identify the tasks and knowledge/skills that are important for recently licensed architects, practicing independently, to safeguard the health, safety, and welfare of the public. Nearly 200 tasks and knowledge/skills identified in the 2007 survey were verified as important and will be utilized in the future development of NCARB programs.
