The Architect Registration Examination: The Little ARE Book
NCARB produced the first national exam for architects in 1965. Since then, many changes have been made to the exam—after deliberate, studied, and controlled evaluation—for two essential reasons: to update questions so that they reflect current architectural practices and to utilize technology that more accurately assesses the abilities of the candidate. This brochure gives an overview of appointment scheduling, exam security, the confidentiality agreement, and answers FAQs on who to contact if you need assistance at any stage of the testing process.

ARE Security and Development Fee FAQs
In recent months, NCARB has had to turn off substantial amounts of exam content after several candidates posted ARE content on the internet. The cost to develop and replace the exposed content and handle the administrative and legal costs related to these incidents totals an estimated $1.1 million. While the new fee structure will help offset the costs incurred as a result of exam disclosure, it still falls short of the actual cost of developing and administering the exam and monitoring its security.
