IDP Work Settings
To earn training hours for the Intern Development Program (IDP) you must be employed (for pay) in a work setting recognized by your registration board and NCARB. Check with the registration board in which you plan to become licensed to learn their approved work settings. The work settings below are recognized by NCARB.
Work Setting A
Maximum Training Hours Allowed: No Limit
(You must earn at least 1,880 training hours in Work Setting A to complete the IDP).
You are working under the direct supervision of a registered architect at an organization/firm that encompasses the comprehensive practice of architecture, including each of the training areas found in the IDP Training Requirements, and is overseen by principal.
Example: Working for a registered architect at an architecture firm.
Work Setting B
Maximum Training Hours Allowed: 3,720
You are working under the direct supervision of a registered architect at an organization/firm that does not encompass the comprehensive practice of architecture.
Example: Working for a registered architect at an engineering firm.
Work Setting C
Maximum Training Hours Allowed: 1,880
You are working at an organization/firm located outside the United States or Canada under the direct supervision of an architect credentialed to practice architecture by a country other than the United States or Canada.
Example: Working at an architecture firm in Japan with a supervisor who is a licensed architect in Japan.
Work Setting D
Maximum Training Hours Allowed: 1,880 training hours in training categories B, C, and D
You are gaining experience directly related to architecture under the direct supervision of a registered engineer (practicing as a structural, civil, mechanical, or electrical engineer in the field of building construction) or a registered landscape architect.
Example: Working for a registered engineer at an engineering firm.
Work Setting E
Maximum Training Hours Allowed: 936 training hours in training categories C and D
You are working on activities involving the design and construction of the built environment (such as analysis of existing buildings, planning, programming, design of interior space, review of technical submissions, engaging in building construction activities, and the like) under the direct supervision of a person experienced in the activity.
Example: Working for a licensed contractor at a construction firm.
Work Setting F
Maximum Training Hours Allowed: 1,960 training hours in training category D
You are doing full-time teaching or research in a NAAB-accredited or CACB-accredited professional degree program
Work Setting FF
Maximum Training Hours Allowed: 80 training hours in training area 16
You are performing professional and community service that does not fall under the Work Settings A-F.
